I am not into football whatsoever but the reason I clicked on this article is because I am from Texas and grew up watching Texas A&M. When thinking back to all the games I watched as a child I don’t particularly recall the original entrance music. I think there is something to be said about how music can become so integral to an identity that it is not particularly thought about until it is changed. You don’t ever realize it was there until it's gone. I think music and sound are very powerful tools in terms of association, identity, and memory, however, I am not a sound person and therefore don’t particularly think about it quite often. It is articles like these or times when I put my music on shuffle and a particular song comes on that holds a memory when I begin to think about the power of music.

I think this article really highlights how “frivolous” design choices (how much of the world sees lights, sound, etc.) can affect the audience. While only a song, the anthem change has led to deep upset. I see the cause of this to be that the song has become part of the culture of A&M. I come from a family of Texas A&M alums, my mom’s biggest pride being Aggie of the Year, and the football scene there is intense. However, in my opinion, upset fans are not a valid enough reason for continuing to plan a song by an artist that offends so many. I find this small anthem change reaction to be indicative of the current culture war at Texas A&M as a whole. Between the issues with their president and journalism school in the past year, it seems as though Texas A&M is just not willing to make changes to become a more welcoming community.

This makes a lot of sense why Aggie fans would be upset and want to return to tradition. Football relies on immediate recognition, see the specific colors of the team or their mascot or even their music. It is branding and a long held tradition that is often passed down within families to be fans of a certain team. For a lot of these teams, their music is synonymous with their brand and their fans. People will hear the song on the radio and go, “whoah its the Aggie’s fight song!” So maintaining a consistent song is good for both marketing purposes as well as being good for just general fan and team morale. A football team without their fight music is like Phantom without the Chandelier, Les Mis without the oversized flag, Into the Woods without a freaky looking Milky White puppet. Just not the same and liable to disappoint.
