Watch (and Hear) Emma Cline’s Buzzy New Novel Become an Audiobook

The New York Times: More than a quarter of American adults listened to an audiobook in the last year, according to a recent PEW Research survey. That’s tens of millions of people diving into one of the hundreds of thousands of titles that are now available with just a tap. They listen in the car and at the gym, in the bath and at the store, to stories narrated by one person and to full-cast productions with dozens of actors, music and sound effects.

Why negotiating gives you anxiety — and why it shouldn't

Salon.com: Does the word "influence" make you clench a little? Does the concept of "negotiation" give you anxiety? It shouldn't. As author and assistant professor at Yale Zoe Chance explains it, we've been influencing and negotiating all our lives. Negotiation in everyday life isn't like a tense Hollywood drama, with clocks running down and people pounding their fists on desks. It's just... communication. And better communication makes life better for everybody, whether we're trying to change the world or just change our jobs.

Black-Owned Philly Bookstore Creates Civic Intervention As Afrofuturist Theater

90.5 WESA: Before Jeannine Cook opened Harriett’s Bookshop on Girard Avenue in Fishtown earlier this year, she had been an educator. She still has a few tricks from the classroom up her sleeve.

“How do you get your student to pay attention?” she said. “You do something out of the ordinary.”

A Clear Path to Razor-Sharp Estimating

Remodeling: The typical progression of a building contractor is this: You work as a carpenter, start doing work on your own, hire a helper, hire an experienced carpenter, start doing more complicated work, and, before you know it, you’re doing a half million in volume and realize you don’t actually know if you’re making any money or not. At that point, you start looking for resources that can help you move from busy to profitable.

A Virtual Theatre Book Group

Exeunt Magazine: Between livestreams, Zoom meetings and newsfeeds, lockdown is a time where you can rack up horrifying screentime stats without even noticing. Give your eyes a rest with some of these theatre-related books. Exeunt writers have scoured their shelves to dig out the hefty volumes that they’ve finally got time to tackle – or the papery old friends that they’re returning to for comfort and inspiration.

Warhol's Vast (And Zany) Archive Is The Subject Of A New Book

90.5 WESA: “I don’t think there’s another artist in the world with an archive as complete as Warhol’s or as interesting,” said Blake Gopnik, a nationally known critic and author of a forthcoming Warhol biography. “The great thing about Warhol’s archive is that it has a bit of everything in it, and I think that he wanted that to be the case. He wanted to sow confusion, rather than to clean up the story.”

New Theater Books for Summer Reading 2019

New York Theater: Here are 14 new or forthcoming books about theater, listed under three general categories — Scripts and Play Anthologies; Biographies and Memoirs; Theater History, Criticism and Reference — plus a bonus of two books likely to be of interest to theatergoers, which I list under the category Theater Adjacent. Only a few of these selections are what you could call beach reads (and a couple won’t even be officially available until the Fall), but they promise to keep you engaged in the stage even when you’re nowhere near one.
