Pandemic Pushes Los Angeles Production Down 54%

Variety: The COVID-19 pandemic pushed down location production in the Los Angeles area by 54%, FilmLA reported on Wednesday.

The permitting agency’s data showed 4,199 shoot days from July through September. Reality TV was up 10.3% to 1,159 shoot days, while commercials slid 41.2% to 782 days. Paul Audley, longtime president of FilmLA, said production is poised for a moderate recovery during the current quarter.

Center Theatre Group counters COVID with a new Digital Stage

Los Angeles Times: Los Angeles’ largest nonprofit theater company, Center Theatre Group, said at the end of March that it hoped to stage live performances by fall at all three of its venues: the Ahmanson, the Mark Taper Forum and the Kirk Douglas. But by mid-June, the company said it would have to lay off more than half of its staff and remain dark until April 2021.

L.A.'s Satellite Club Closes for Good, Says 'Indie Venues Are Screwed'

Variety: L.A.’s Satellite club — a mainstay of the Silver Lake music scene for 25 years that has hosted major acts like Lady Gaga, Beck, the White Stripes and the Foo Fighters — is closed for good, its owners announced Friday.

Shut down since March 12 due to the pandemic, the nightspot has already removed its stage and is being transformed into a sit-down restaurant, because of the dim chances of live music returning any time soon, the club revealed in social media posts.

L.A. History of Open-Air Theaters

At This Stage: John Steven McGroarty (1862-1944), born and educated in Pennsylvania, moved to Los Angeles in 1901, having already established himself as a lawyer, a city administrator and a corporate executive with a mining company. So naturally, upon settling in LA, he took up poetry, playwriting and journalism, becoming a columnist with the LA Times. In 1909, McGroarty edited the LA Times centenary edition. His growing interest in local history led him to script The Mission Play (1911), a three-hour pageant on the history of the California Missions, chronicling their founding in 1769 through secularization in 1834, ending with their “final ruin” in 1847.

Los Angeles mayor says large gatherings like concerts and sporting events may not come back until 2021

CNNPolitics: Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said Wednesday large gatherings like sporting events or concerts may not resume in the city before 2021 as the US grapples with mitigating the novel coronavirus pandemic.
"It's difficult to imagine us getting together in the thousands anytime soon, so I think we should be prepared for that this year," Garcetti told CNN's Wolf Blitzer on "The Situation Room."
