Pittsburgh CLO tries a change of pace with quieter, gentler 'Once'

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: For every Tony-winning mega-musical such as “The Producers” and “Hamilton,” there have been the little successes that could — and did — reap Broadway’s top prize.

The Necessity of a New Green Federal Theatre Project

HowlRound Theatre Commons: The most recent United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report gives humanity twelve years to curb greenhouse gas emissions, in order to keep temperature rise below 1.5 degrees Celsius. Over 1.5 degrees and widespread climate disruptions—heatwaves, floods, fires, droughts, of the sort we see happening now—will intensify, adversely affecting everyone on the planet (though, of course, the poor suffer first and most). Other reports give us as little as eighteen months to act.

Deepan Sivaraman on Going Beyond Words to Embrace The Visual Language of Theatre

The Theatre Times: For well over a decade now, Deepan Sivaraman, an associate professor at the School of Culture and Creative Expressions in Ambedkar University, New Delhi, has been questioning notions of stage and text, both as writer-director and as curator of theatre festivals. In his quest to highlight a new theatre language that is primarily visual rather than verbal, Sivaraman has faced flak from traditionalists. In this interview, Sivaraman talks about what it means to lead the charge of the avant-garde.

Hijinks Galore at Apple Hill Playhouse's "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum"

Pittsburgh in the Round: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is one of those shows that vividly proves that the Greco-Romans of the B.C. era really knew how to live with drama nerd flair. This seems like a pretty patently provable claim if you think about it—consider the pompous flamboyance of gladiator fights; think of the wild histrionics of Sextus and his friends in our Ecce Romani textbooks. So, when Stephen Sondheim (of course) created the quintessentially bonkers musical A Funny Thing.., he was really showing the Romans in their best, gaudiest light.

The Three Rivers Regatta is canceled and the event group is under fire

www.nextpittsburgh.com: For the first time in 41 years, Pittsburgh’s summer will pass without a regatta.

Competing for our entertainment dollar over the next year will be new platforms from Disney, AT&T, Comcast and a little company called Apple.

The 'horrifying and comic' Hand to Hand features steampunks, jam-band prog, and two 600-pound animatronic hands

Theater | Pittsburgh | Pittsburgh City Paper: One day in mid-July, Steve O'Hearn was wondering if his hands were maybe just a little too big. As co-artistic director of the Pittsburgh-based art collective, Squonk, O'Hearn had spent the previous night rehearsing for his group's new production, which was set to debut in Baltimore 48 hours later.

Waiting For A Nice Chat

Butts In the Seats: I came across an article about English towns that are installing “chat benches” with signs saying, “The ‘Happy to Chat’ Bench: Sit Here If You Don’t Mind Someone Stopping To Say Hello.”

If this sounds vaguely familiar, you may recall that four years ago, I posted about a bus company in Brazil that reserved seats on buses and provided conversation prompts for people who wanted to meet someone new.

Squonk Opera Lends Two Hands At The Regatta

90.5 WESA: Indoor stage or outdoor? For Squonk Opera, it seldom has been a question: For most of its 27 years, the troupe has focused on open-air extravaganzas, filled with its melodic art rock and big, surreal props.

Squonk Opera performs "Hand to Hand": multiple performances daily Fri., Aug. 2-Sun., Aug. 4, at the Three Rivers Regatta, Point State Park, Downtown.

For instance, the group’s five musicians performed one recent show, “Cyclesonic,” while perched atop a matching set of pedal-powered platforms.

Caliban Never Belonged to Shakespeare

Literary Hub: In the front of the classroom, the tenured professor teaching this Introduction to Literary Criticism course my sophomore year of college lectures on Shakespeare’s The Tempest. I am the student of language; he, the master of language. This is the reason I came to get a higher education, after all, hoping my mastering of language and my becoming expert in a field will secure me a job, a white picket fence, a 401k, financial security. I want to be all-knowing like this white professor and my white peers, like the white teachers in high school and the white children in my kindergarten classroom—because they are so smart, I tell myself, because their language is so pretty.

'Hamilton the Exhibition’ is closing early in Chicago

Chicago Tribune: In the first significant disappointment for the hugely successful team behind “Hamilton,” one of the most successful Broadway musicals of all time, the spinoff known as “Hamilton the Exhibition” is to close down in Chicago on Aug. 25. And the original plan to move the exhibition around the country following the end of the Chicago stand has now been abandoned.

Refreshingly Unsafe: Artistic Director Stephanie Ybarra Challenges Traditional Rules of Engagement at Center Stage

BmoreArt | Baltimore Contemporary Art: Theatergoers, picture this: You’re in your seat dutifully being as quiet as possible. You’re watching a story unfold onstage when, out of the corner of your eye, you spy somebody a few seats or rows over raising her phone before her face. She’s so engrossed by what’s going she wants to take a photo. No flash, no audible shutter click, just a quick raised smartphone. Would you summon an usher? What if—hold onto your pearls—she was so enrapt by the play she verbally responded. Answered a rhetorical question. Right on’d a character. Would you shush her?

The 5 weirdest things we've witnessed at the theatre

www.timeout.com: Most of the time, good behaviour is just common sense. Holding a door open for someone; saying please and thank you; not farting in an elevator: life’s little courtesies aren’t rocket science.

And what’s true for everyday life usually goes for those more niche occasions too, like a trip to the theatre.

How Does the New Moulin Rouge! The Musical Compare to the Real Thing in Paris?

Dance Magazine: On opening night, there were a few members in the audience with a unique perspective on the show: Dancers and artistic staff members from the actual Moulin Rouge in Paris. Samantha Greenlund, an Everson, Washington, native, spent the past three years as a dancer at the Moulin Rouge, and spoke to DM the morning after the red carpet event to offer her take on the musical.

What You, Theatremaker, Can Learn from Theatre for the Very Young

HowlRound Theatre Commons: “Where’s the TV?” a five-year-old sitting on a chair with pretzeled legs asked. “There is no TV,” the mother answered, “this is a live show.”

That conversation happened next to me in early May during a production at the Alliance Theatre’s Toddler Takeover in Atlanta, Georgia—an annual festival of international performances designed for audiences aged zero to five and their guardians. The Alliance’s trailblazing commitment to theatre for the very young has been shepherded by their director of theatre for youth and families, Rosemary Newcott, who is retiring at the end of this season.

Are theatre's schemes and awards deterring a new generation of talent?

Exeunt Magazine: There’s a scheme that asks you to programme three shows, and do two rounds of interviews, for the chance to be in a pool of potential assistant directors. One that asks for thousands of words pitching a pie-in-the-sky show, right down to the marketing strategy. One that starts with reading eight plays and producing a written proposal about your favourite, then attending a meeting at the theatre and contacting a whole – still only potential! – creative team, then presenting a visual concept with a designer; shortlisted applicants must also produce a full model box, and do a full weekend of directing workshops and interviews.

"Uprootedness Is Not Always Negative": Nalini Malani

The Theatre Times: One of our most thought-provoking contemporary artists, Nalini Malani, known for her lush, politically charged mixed-media paintings and drawings, videos, installations, and theatre, was recently awarded the prestigious Joan Miró Prize for 2019. Malani’s works give voice to the silenced, particularly women. The award covers the production of a solo exhibition scheduled for 2020 at the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona.

Skyrocketing Seattle prices and lack of space for artists led to the start of this arts festival

The Seattle Times: It all started with a backyard party.

Travels of a Scenic Artist and Scholar. Opportunity is Not a Lengthy Visitor

Drypigment.net: When I place the Cleveland Scottish Rite within the context of many other Masonic buildings that have been sold over the past few years, I think of one particular line from the musical “Into the Woods” – “Opportunity is not a lengthy visitor.” Many Masonic buildings are being sold for a fraction of their worth and now is the time to invest if you have the funds. Those buying these massive entertainment complexes have a strategy to turn a profit, a strategy that I wish the remaining Scottish Rite facilities would consider before selling.

Beyond the Bathrooms

HowlRound Theatre Commons: Many arts organizations across the United States have started to vocally back the fight for transgender and non-binary equality. In a lot of cases, gender inclusion—at least for the New England theatre organizations where we work—has taken shape in the form of gender-neutral restrooms.

How Did They Make The Lion King? A Report From the Set

io9.gizmodo.com: Long before Disney’s remake of The Lion King hit theaters, it was a beacon of curiosity. Obviously, director Jon Favreau and his team weren’t going to film real lions, they were going to use digital technology to create all the animals, as he did with great success in The Jungle Book. But The Jungle Book is The Jungle Book. This was The Lion King, a remake of an even more popular, culturally resonant film. What would making this movie look like in real life? I was lucky enough to find out.

TREND ALERT: Is the new model for musical revivals on Broadway NOT to be on Broadway?

The Producer's Perspective: This past season there were only two musical revivals on Broadway. And one of the duo was produced by a non-profit.

And next season, I only see one comin’ . . .

Why the sudden lack? Are we running out of musicals to revive?

Confessions of a Sexist Playwright

HowlRound Theatre Commons: Thanks in part to the #MeToo movement, mansplaining, gaslighting, and privilege have become familiar terms in theatre communities. Whether in the rehearsal room, the office, onstage, backstage, or in the scene shops, straight, white, male, cisgender, and temporarily able-bodied privilege is being called out. Up and down the lines of production, people are challenging inequity and speaking truth to power. And while calling out oppressions and isms is crucial, for many theatremakers the call needs to come from inside the house.

Finding Her Tribe: A Conversation with Rachel Hauck

Stage Directions: Glance at the current resume of set designer Rachel Hauck and under “Recent Off-Broadway” you’ll find more than 50 productions. Look at “Recent Regional” and you’ll find yet another 50 shows. Under Broadway, no “recent” is required, because Hauck has but three credits, but what impressive credits they are and one ends with a Tony Award. Her first Broadway credit was for John Leguizamo’s Latin History for Morons. The other two are for productions that have been running simultaneously during much of 2019.

Summer Friday Nights at The Frick

Made In PGH: Think of it – what are you most likely to do on a Friday evening, especially when the Summer season rolls in. Yes, there are countless outdoor festivals, concerts and parades to last a lifetime, and lets not forget about the nightlife scene here in Pittsburgh. From South Side to East Liberty, you would be pressed to not find a place to spend a loud, fun evening.

Sex and the Solo Show

Theatre Development Fund – TDF: In their new solo shows, Jacqueline Novak and Lois Robbins talk honestly and hilariously about sex, but they have very different takes on the subject. In Get On Your Knees at the Cherry Lane Theatre, Novak, a millennial stand-up comic, presents a personal and intellectual history of blow jobs. Lois Robbins, an actress of a certain age, chronicles her romantic relationships in L.O.V.E.R., which begins performances at the Pershing Square Signature Center on August 21. Novak's show is lewd, sarcastic and heavily academic, examining the absurdity of physical sexual desires and acts. Robbins' piece is more emotional and confessional, beginning with her memories of childhood orgasms courtesy of the family washing machine. Despite their varying approaches, both writer-performers find it empowering to talk so openly about sex onstage.

Create Realistic Faux Dirt That Travels Well & Installs Easily

Rosco Spectrum: Brigitte Bechtel is a scenic artist whose paintbrushes have taken her from Boston, MA to Tucson, AZ and beyond! While working at The Arizona Theatre Company, she discovered a delightful new challenge. That means every ATC set design needs to be planned, built, and executed as a touring production.

Over 80% of Ballets Are Still Choreographed By Men

Dance Magazine: In the past several years, ballet has been called out time and again for not fostering, presenting and commissioning the work of women. Recently, highlighting women ballet choreographers has become somewhat of a trend, with companies pioneering initiatives to try to close the gender gap, or presenting all-women programs.

But numbers don't lie, and unfortunately, we still haven't made much progress.

Picklesburgh Doubles Footprint For Fifth Year

90.5 WESA: Picklesburgh hasn’t exactly been in a pickle. Last year, its fourth, the pickle-themed festival drew an estimated 100,000 or more to the Roberto Clemente Bridge. And the three-day specialty-foods event has continued attracting national attention. But with vendors lining both sides of the bridge, and visitors crowding blacktop and sidewalks alike, things could get both a little hot and a little crowded.

Black, Queer, and Here

AMERICAN THEATRE: Last month, when Michael R. Jackson’s A Strange Loop earned unanimous praise upon opening at Playwrights Horizons, it was a pivotal moment for me as a spectator. As someone who is also a Black, gay, and a musical theatre writer, I saw myself and my story onstage for the first time. I guffawed, clapped my hands, snapped along, celebrated the pageantry of Black excellence, and even teared up a bit during the play’s climax.

Scenic Design: Is Digital Technology Erasing The Need For Drawing?

“Rock of Ages” at Pittsburgh CLO

The Pittsburgh Tatler: I’m likely the least suited person in the world to write about this show. Mainly because I’ve never been a fan of rock music, and particularly of hard rock music. So although I’m the right age to have this “jukebox musical” take me on a nostalgia trip back to the eighties, I don’t really have the kind of associations with the music or culture that would evoke in me that sentimental glow

DanceAfrica: Pittsburgh returns to Kelly Strayhorn Theater for three days of African cultural immersion

Five Ways Stage Managers Facilitate Rehearsal

Dramatics Magazine: IN THE FOREWORD to Thomas A. Kelly’s The Backstage Guide to Stage Management, Sir Peter Hall says that it’s the stage manager’s duty to “create an atmosphere in which everything is possible.” That sounds amazing, right? Well … amazing and perhaps a bit daunting. But here are five ways a stage manager can build a rehearsal room climate of trust, creativity, and efficiency.

CUE 2019 - a weekend to remember

et cetera...: This was definitely a CUE to remember. Our pre-console training attendees made it into Madison on Wednesday with little issue, but that was one of the only predictable events over the next couple of days. Storms blew through the Midwest on Wednesday and Thursday causing flight after flight to be delayed. And only about 50% of our attendees made it for the opening reception on Thursday evening.

Travels of a Scenic Artist and Scholar. LHAT Historic Theater Tours – The Forrest Theatre, July 17, 2019

Drypigment.net: The Forrest Theatre tour took place on the final day of the League of Historic American Theatres National conference in Philadelphia. The LHAT program noted, “The Forrest is a quintessential ‘road house’, used primarily by touring theatre and dance companies. It was built in 1927 to compete with rival A.L. Erlanger’s planned new playhouse at Market and 21st Streets.

Is Dance Underfunded Because It's Undervalued?

Dance Magazine: I hate asking for money. I am tired of feeling like we, as dance practitioners, are constantly begging for every morsel of sustenance. We are often seen as the poor stepchildren of the arts, usually thought of as having nothing tangible to sell.

Pittsburgh Classic Player's "A Streetcar Named Desire": A Study in Meaningful Theatre

Pittsburgh in the Round: Pittsburgh Classic Player’s A Streetcar Named Desire is not an easy thing to sit through. This is in no way a reflection on the quality of the show as a whole—which is extraordinary—nor the performances given by the actors—which are inimitable. Rather, PCP’s adaptation, led fearlessly and artfully by Director Shannon Knapp, is unremittingly committed to presenting every excoriating, uncomfortable, and profoundly human of Tennessee Williams’ play, but through a modern lens that demystifies the legacy of the story that is so problematic. When you are overwhelmed at intermission, it is because everyone involved is doing their jobs very well.

How Electricity Impacted Modern Art in Paris, the City of Light

Artsy: “An artist has no home in Europe except in Paris,” asserts Friedrich Nietzsche in his 1888 autobiography Ecce Homo. For artists in the late 19th century, a stint in Paris was an important right of passage for the development of their philosophies and practices. As it approached the end of the century, Paris entered a period of rapid modernization and urbanization, a time characterized by a sense of prosperity and optimism among its population.

Echo Theater fires a director and cancels the play 'Pass Over.' What happened?

Los Angeles Times: It was the type of announcement any theater, large or small, would dread sending: a notice about the cancellation of a play. But for the first time in its 23-year history, the Echo Theater Company in Atwater Village did just that.

On the day before the California premiere of Antoinette Nwandu’s “Pass Over,” a play about the harsh realities facing black men in America, Echo staff on July 12 sent an email to patrons and posted a notice on its website: “‘Pass Over’ is not going to open due to internal artistic differences that cannot be reconciled.”

6 Things Dance Majors Should Do To Prepare for Graduation

Dance Magazine: As graduation day looms, college seniors might find themselves reeling with both excitement and dread. "They have to navigate this tender moment where they're opening their wings and about to jump out of the dance department and wondering if the ground is going to catch them," says Courtney Harris, interim chair of the dance and choreography department at Virginia Commonwealth University. Today's job market is no cakewalk, but there are meaningful steps that students can take throughout college to make the transition easier.

Activating the Audience

HowlRound Theatre Commons: Across the many different kinds of theatrical work, the presence of a live audience is one of the few elements that remains constant. Historically, the positioning of the audience inside a performance has taken many forms. In Victorian-era melodrama, audiences determined the outcomes of plays by yelling and throwing food at the stage; in the less violent Commedia dell’arte, audiences gathered in their community spaces to watch groups of traveling players. When it comes to contemporary theatre, many artists—working with historical precedents like these in mind—craft unique and engaged performer-spectator relationships in order to tell their stories.

San Diego Comic-Con 2019 Activation Coverage

noproscenium.com: Well, the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con has come to an end and with it, a host of impressive experiential activations have come and gone. This year, I tried my best (and failed) to make it to them all (and, ya know, still catch some panels, shop, party, see friends…)

Suffice it to say, the experiential marketing pop-ups are here to stay and have rapidly become a draw in and of themselves. This year, the Gaslamp District was host to so many, in fact, that I only had time for maybe two thirds of the “big” ones (and sadly none of the “smaller” ones).

It doesn’t.

‘The Privilege of Escape’ Subverts the Escape Room Form (The NoPro Review)

noproscenium.com: We lost. We were given 45 minutes and we lost. We did not pass Go; we did not collect $200.

That is to say: we did not escape the room in time. The game was over.

We left dejected, frustrated, and a little sad. We had tried our best, a group of mostly strangers, and still had not succeeded despite our best efforts.

The Video Game Industry Can't Go On Like This

New consoles will likely be shown off, bold new streaming initiatives will begin to launch, and we’ll see all the wonderful kinds of games they will bring us. All these new things will come, and we’ll close the book on a generation that saw the industry that makes games come under greater scrutiny than ever before, as studios shuttered, developers burned out, and toxic work culture fostered environments hostile to marginalized people.

You get Jeffrey Binder’s looney tunes, funny-meets-slapstick-violent Scapino

As I mentioned in my earlier post, if a light source does not plot exactly on the blackbody curve, a perpendicular line is drawn from the source’s chromaticity coordinates through the blackbody curve. Kinetic's excellent 'Scapino' features 'impressive cast of clowns'

Pittsburgh Current: Hey! Who wants to see a play written in 1671?

Normally my answer would be a mumbled: “Ah, sorry, I’m out of town that week.” But Kinetic Theatre decided to stage Scapino, based on Moliere’s 17th-century comedy Scapin the Schemer and because of the gross injustice of my not being allowed to review plays I haven’t actually seen, off I went.

Theatre Factory Spices Up High School Angst in "Heathers: The Musical"

Pittsburgh in the Round: In looking at popular media from the last fifty years, you’d be forgiven for thinking every single high school in America is an inescapable hellscape where the popular students are merciless, the unpopular kids are powerless, and the adults are clueless. This viewpoint may or may not always shake out in reality, but it serves an obvious and useful purpose as a metaphor. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Heathers: The Musical, currently playing in a winning production by the Theatre Factory.

Drawing a Line

HowlRound Theatre Commons: A flood of well-publicized articles on the decades of harassment plaguing the theatre sector cemented the severity of the #MeToo movement. Despite this, discussions around how to address the harassment have been fraught and muddled. Boilerplate harassment policies simply aren’t effective when the work sometimes requires individuals to change clothes, touch or kiss, and discuss sexual content with their coworkers.

Some remorselessly petty quibbles with West End shows

Exeunt Magazine: It feels like an itch, like a nagging flea in your plushy red theatre seat. That pedantic voice in your head that says “Really?” or “How?” or “I very much doubt it!” And yes, the secret to enjoying big budget theatrical spectacles is to get swept along on a wave of deliberately suspended disbelief as the plot takes implausible turn after turn. But sometimes it’s fun to let that inner voice roar. In this piece, Exeunt’s writers give vent to the quibbles that have been eating away at them.

Broadway Loses Millions due to Blackout; StubHub Out $500,000

www.ticketnews.com: While the aftermath of a sudden power outage in New York City on Saturday saw uplifting footage of artists on the street performing for fans after their theaters went dark, the bottom line for many in the event industry wasn’t nearly as rosy. The five-hour power failure, which largely hit the venue-dense mid-town portion of Manhattan, prompted the cancellation of 26 out of 30 Saturday night Broadway performances, as well as the postponement of a Jennifer Lopez show scheduled at Madison Square Garden, and presumably scads of other shows at smaller spaces.

Ryobi Cordless Glue Gun P305 Review

Pro Tool Reviews: Like anyone else, you’ve likely got at least a few things around the shop that could use a healthy dose of hot glue to get them back to working order. We definitely do. Or, maybe you like to work on arts and crafts in your spare time. Who knows? We’re not judging. Helpful as they are, glue guns generally require you to plug them in, don’t have cord lengths that are particularly forgiving from a mobility perspective, and are usually tucked away in some forgotten nook of your closet or something. The Ryobi Cordless Glue Gun brings you the kind of mobility that only battery power provides.

Surviving Office Politics With ‘Focus Group, A Focus Group’ (Review)

noproscenium.com: I despise office surveys. They provide false hope that change can occur in the future based on employee recommendations but can also be weaponized as a tool for management to suss out troublemakers. So in preparing to see Nomad Art Collective’s debut immersive show Focus Group, A Focus Group, I found myself begrudgingly filling out the first survey I’ve taken in over a decade, filled with the kinds of corporate growth questions I hate, like rating from one to five on how good I think my boss is at their job. How are you supposed to not put down “five, being the best” on a named survey for such a question?

Nothing is an Answer, Everything is a Signal

Located between 30th and 36th Streets between 10th and 11th Avenues, this rail yard is basically as far west as you can go on the Manhattan Isle without leaving Midtown. It is in this area that the Megabus picks you up to take you out of the city. The Jacob K. Javits Convention Center sits quietly nearby awaiting the next hoard of [fill in the blank] superfans ready to geek out over the subset of culture they most love.

Review: Shi Yi Tool Sy365-8 Desoldering Iron, Second Cheapest You Can Find

Hackaday: Readers with long memories will recall there was a time when I amused myself by tacking inexpensive tools or electronic devices to my various orders from the Chinese electronic Aladdin’s Cave. Often these inexpensive purchases proved to be as disastrous or ineffective as you might expect, but sometimes they show unexpected promise, true diamonds in the rough. It’s been a while and life has intervened over the last year, but it’s time to resume this harmless diversion.

Putting on a Black Play Doesn't Break Down Barriers: How Trinity Rep Creates Community Dialogue

OF/BY/FOR ALL: “I grew up in a family that only saw art as a luxury item. When we had a bit of money, we went bowling or to a fast food restaurant. Art was for the "other." I always viewed my role as an art maker as a job that was expendable. I understood my place as an art maker from a place of commodity versus from a place of service,” said Joe Wilson Jr.

A People's History: How Daisey does it

DC Theatre Scene: As much as I have been knocked out by Daisey’s hilarious and trenchant material—which is about America’s history and his own—I have been marveling at his command of it. Each 90-minute show is different and unscripted. He improvises from handwritten notes on the table in front of him that he scarcely glances at. Now and then he’ll pick up a page to read aloud from a historical source, quoting from Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States.

Meet the Motion Capture Star Who Brings Hollywood's Creatures to Life

Dance Magazine: When Hollywood needs to build a fantasy world populated with extraordinary creatures, they call Terry Notary.

The former gymnast and circus performer got his start in film in 2000 when Ron Howard asked him to teach the actors how to move like Whos for How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Translating Shakespeare

The Theatre Times: Translation of Shakespeare’s works is almost as old as Shakespeare himself; the first German adaptations date from the early 17th century. And within Shakespeare’s plays, moments of translation create comic relief and heighten the awareness that communication is not a given. Translation also served as a metaphor for physical transformation or transportation.
