This Friday, I got a chance to see the musical THE LION KING at Benedum Center presented by Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. I have watched this musical more than five times, however, it had been more than 10 years since I last saw in non-Japanese. The atmosphere created by black actors was incredible, it had a distinctive character that no other country’s casts can mimic. Just to clarify, Japanese casts do provide the world’s top-class performances. Yet it is impossible for them to beat the company filled with actual African spirits, including Tshidi Manye, an actress interviewed in the video, who actually have family members in South Africa. Nevertheless, although there are some differences in actors, THE LION KING is a masterpiece that “relates to real, human life stories” as Lindiwi Dlamini, the longest serving cast member describes. I remember when I was a kid, I empathized with young Nara the most, and when I was suffering mentally during the university entrance examination season, the song “Endless Night” trembled me with emotion. This time, another different scene touched my heart, but I have decided not to share my current story, here.
