How Did They Make The Lion King? A Report From the Set

io9.gizmodo.com: Long before Disney’s remake of The Lion King hit theaters, it was a beacon of curiosity. Obviously, director Jon Favreau and his team weren’t going to film real lions, they were going to use digital technology to create all the animals, as he did with great success in The Jungle Book. But The Jungle Book is The Jungle Book. This was The Lion King, a remake of an even more popular, culturally resonant film. What would making this movie look like in real life? I was lucky enough to find out.

The process behind creating the new Lion King remake looks like one that was liberating and fun, once all the foundational elements were in place. The description of immersing yourself into a video game of sorts and just placing elements where you want, without the need to lift heavy equipment or spend lots of time creating elaborate set ups seems like a very enjoyable creative experience. It's a remarkable demonstration of the power of digital filmmaking now. But I think the problem lies within that. While the film appears visually stunning to us now, who knows how rapidly technology will change in the future. This incredibly realistic looking film may look dated within the near future. It is also unfortunate that this effort was put into a project that ultimately was not as successful as some might have hoped for. Should the team had dedicated this amount of time and effort into a new story, maybe the results would have been more worthwhile.
