Finding Her Tribe: A Conversation with Rachel Hauck

Stage Directions: Glance at the current resume of set designer Rachel Hauck and under “Recent Off-Broadway” you’ll find more than 50 productions. Look at “Recent Regional” and you’ll find yet another 50 shows. Under Broadway, no “recent” is required, because Hauck has but three credits, but what impressive credits they are and one ends with a Tony Award. Her first Broadway credit was for John Leguizamo’s Latin History for Morons. The other two are for productions that have been running simultaneously during much of 2019.

I think its interesting how Rachel Hauck decided to go to a liberal arts school instead of a conservatory program. I also think that its interesting that she didn’t think about going to grad school but she is still a very prominent broadway designer. I’m not sure if this is more of a special case of people who don’t do conservatory programs or go to grad school but still get to design for broadway. I also think that its pretty interesting how she didn’t really take that many classes in drafting but was still able to be a designer. She says that she doesn’t draw very well and this makes me wonder how she is able to convey her designs in ways besides the models she builds. I feel like having a drawing before building a model would be a more efficient way to design as models can take a long time to build.
