Lighting Designer Justin Townsend Lights Moulin Rouge Musical
www.livedesignonline.com: Moulin Rouge! The Musical, based on the 2001 film by Baz Luhrmann, transports us to Paris, France where Christian, an English poet/writer, falls in love with Satine, star of the Moulin Rouge cabaret in Montmartre. The musical, directed by Alex Timbers, has a score composed of hit songs of the last 50 years, including iconic songs from the film, as well as music from the past 15 years, since the film came out.

Moulin Rouge is a very current show, as it just opened on Thursday, July 25th after successful previews for the past weeks, and a solid run in Boston. I was lucky enough to see Moulin Rogue in Boston and it was an entirely life affirming experience. It was a stunning show in every aspect, and it demonstrated how brilliantly tech can pair with acting. It was one of the most impressive couplings of tech and acting in which neither one was the 100% star. Hearing what the lighting designer had to say about his design and his process makes complete sense, and it was very clear that a large preference was placed on color. The color was very important to the storytelling, and even further, the intense use of wash lighting instead of specifically focused lights was really important. I thoroughly enjoyed this show and found it to be a brilliant utilization of traditional and new lighting techniques.
