When the lights went out in NYC, Broadway performed impromptu sidewalk shows

Boing Boing: On Saturday night, a blackout darkened Manhattan's West Side for several hours. But that didn't stop cast members from several Broadway shows, and Carnegie Hall, from performing. Not in their scheduled stage performances but impromptu ones outside on the sidewalks.

The NYC blackout was all over the news and social media, and one of the most publicized issues was the inability of Broadway shows to perform. With Saturday clearly being a hugely lucrative night, many were concerned about how this would impact shows. In addition, it was very upsetting to many that people who had paid for shows and were expecting to see them were now without luck. Drawing on the spirit of live theater, many actors instead decided to perform in the street, giving the audience an entirely different experience. The excitement and spontaneity of the happenings was very clear and many people were thrilled to have this exceptionally unique performance. Events like this remind us of why we go in to theater, not for the pomp and opulence, but instead to create something new and exciting every night. So often that experience is taken away from Broadway actors because of their rather rigid blocking and strict notes, but this blackout gave a fun opportunity to die back in to what it means to be a live actor.
