Five Ways Stage Managers Facilitate Rehearsal
Dramatics Magazine: IN THE FOREWORD to Thomas A. Kelly’s The Backstage Guide to Stage Management, Sir Peter Hall says that it’s the stage manager’s duty to “create an atmosphere in which everything is possible.” That sounds amazing, right? Well … amazing and perhaps a bit daunting. But here are five ways a stage manager can build a rehearsal room climate of trust, creativity, and efficiency.

While this article goes over some very basic points of stage management it would be a good source to educate someone outside of the show about stage management. It demonstrates how essential the stage manager is to create a positive rehearsal environment, organization, and note-taking. Stage managers are essential to make the most out of rehearsal by keeping everyone on track, focused, and engaged. I particularly liked the quote the article opened with from Thomas A. Kelly’s that stage managers “create an atmosphere in which everything is possible" because it demonstrates the overarching impact that a stage manager has on the creation of the show as well as the possibility in theater to do essentially anything and everything.
