Analysis Tool Targets Hidden Sources of Carbon in Mass Timber Projects
Engineering News-Record: Mass timber buildings are popular for their claimed carbon neutrality and sustainability compared to conventional concrete and steel structures. But is that common assumption true across the board?
That is the question two architects at design firm Corgan have studied since a 2023 World Resources Institute report outlined sources of carbon emissions in the timber supply chain that were not being well documented.

How the construction industry's massive waste problem can be solved
www.fastcompany.com: The construction industry generates a lot of waste. Construction and demolition create more than 600 million tons of waste debris every year in the U.S., according to Environmental Protection Agency figures from 2018. That’s twice as much as the municipal waste collected from homes and businesses in cities.

Finnish film industry features carbon-neutral production
thisisFINLAND: The carbon footprint of the film was calculated based on the numerous products, services and activities necessary to make it, including transportation, food and electricity. To monitor and report their carbon footprints, all crewmembers read Ekosetti, a sustainable-production guidebook that Aalto University created for the Finnish audiovisual industry.
“It was fun and interesting because it brought the team together,” says Gould. “Once you work with offsetting your emissions, there’s no way back.

Environmental Considerations for FFF 3D Printing
Fusion 360 Blog: 3D printing is often viewed as an environmentally friendly manufacturing method because of its reduction in waste material. It’s also shaking up supply chains by allowing localization, consolidation, and reduced inventories. However, every manufacturing process has an environmental impact, and additive manufacturing is no exception. In this article, we’re going to look at the FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication) process and how making changes to your workflow could reduce your parts’ impact on the environment.

Our Experiments: Upcycling in Theatre - An Interview with "Upcycling" Costume and Set Designer Reet Aus from Estonia
The Theatre Times: Reet Aus has spent her career in fashion and theatre committed to sustainability, where she’s learned from the world’s most efficient designer: nature.
Everything began at the Von Krahl theatre in Estonia, after completing her MA studies in fashion in the early 2000s. Concerned by the wastefulness of the industry, Reet started to test new ways of working—making costumes by only using existing materials or sourcing materials from local recycling centers.

How LEED Certification System + Others Make Sustainable Architecture
mymodernmet.com: Buzzwords like sustainable architecture, green architecture, and environmental architecture are mentioned in almost every large-scale building project. While widespread adoption of environmental practices is certainly a great thing, it can be difficult to keep up and understand what makes a good sustainable building.

If recycling plastics isn’t making sense, remake the plastics
Ars Technica: A few years back, it looked like plastic recycling was set to become a key part of a sustainable future. Then, the price of fossil fuels plunged, making it cheaper to manufacture new plastics. Then China essentially stopped importing recycled plastics for use in manufacturing. With that, the bottom dropped out of plastic recycling, and the best thing you could say for most plastics is that they sequestered the carbon they were made of.

Getting Jobs Into Production by Eliminating Waste
Remodeling: When there is a surge in leads, sales and projects in design, remodeling companies are left with the challenge of getting projects through pre-production (estimating, design, material ordering and project planning) quickly and accurately to get jobs into production. Business owners that are facing this challenge can look to improvement of their pre-production processes.

What Makes a Product Sustainable?
Earth911.com: We talk a lot about the importance of sustainability and making sure the products we purchase are sustainable. But what is it, exactly, that makes a product sustainable?
As you might suspect, “sustainable” can mean different things to different companies and individuals. If you want to be an informed consumer, you may find it helpful to consider the different aspects of sustainability.

America needs a Green Declaration of Independence
Salon.com: The document that we celebrate on Independence Day, the Declaration of Independence, was supposed to be a statement of liberation — from the political and economic power structures of Great Britain, whose management of the American colony had failed us. There's something similar happening today, though the oppressing power is not a nation-state. Rather, the modern-day impediments to our liberation and freedom come from corporations, billionaires, media conglomerates, big banks and the like.

Theatre 2021: Steve Tompkins on… a Green New Deal
The Stage - Features: In the architecture studio where I work, we spend a lot of our time imagining a theatre that doesn’t exist yet – sometimes unbuilt, but mostly transformed from its current state. Our process always begins with a search for the narrative core around which we can wrap a bigger conversation, and without which any further decisions on physical form would feel arbitrary and ungrounded.

Earth Day 2020 and sustainability in woodworking
Woodworking Network: Half a century ago, on April 22, 1970, over 20 million Americans took to the streets in hundreds of cities around the country to protest the complete lack of interest (in) environmental conservation. Factories were free to pollute our air and water without any legal consequence. Oil spills were frequent and devastating environmental disasters.

Make Theatre, Not Waste
AMERICAN THEATRE: Around the world, hurricanes have grown in intensity and heat records are being hit on an annual basis. These extreme weather events, powered by climate change, has not spared theatres. The Oregon Shakespeare Festival had to cancel numerous shows and lost $2 million worth of revenue because of local wildfires, which get worse every year. The Alley Theatre suffered $18 million worth of damages from Hurricane Harvey.

A Paperless Broadway- Technology in the Rehearsal Room
www.broadwayworld.com: Theater folks are not necessarily the first to embrace change or technology. So it's not surprising when you walk into a rehearsal room and see creatives sitting with giant binders of paper. But certain companies are trying to change that.
