Judge Extends Pause on Paramount-Warner Bros. Merger for Extra 14 Days
variety.com: Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin is scheduled to hold a hearing on Aug. 3 on a request for a preliminary injunction that would block the deal indefinitely. Paramount is asking for additional time to make its case against the injunction.

The free market relies on competition. With the steady rate of mergers and acquisitions among media companies in the last decade or so it isn't surprising to see pushback on further mergers. For one writers require the bargaining power that comes with having multiple options for which company to work with. As media companies become larger and larger writers have less and less room to negotiate when it comes to compensation and creative control. When there's only so many companies that a writer can work with it becomes more likely that they need to settle for a subpar deal. For that reason I think that the Writers Guild of America is right to challenge the merger. The capitalist system only works if there is sufficient competition between companies that the market can find an equilibrium. I feel that with the current state of the affairs this equilibrium is already tenuous so I hope that this deal is not allowed to go through.
