So often when we see famous people, we just assume that their luck has fallen into their lap and they were just given the right opportunities at the right time, and that is how they wound up where they are. But when reading an interview with Billy Porter it is clear how untrue this is. Going into acting, particularly in theater is incredibly challenging, and can be made even harder when one's identity is not "popular." Porter discusses how easy it is to be yourself when it is popular to be that, but otherwise to be yourself is very daunting. Porter is a brilliant example of how one can retain their own identity while still becoming successful and important. Porter has carved a path for himself, but never abandoned who he is. He can serve as an example to all young aspiring artists that you do not have to change yourself to fit a mold just because it is popular, instead, create a path for yourself and push to simultaneously be yourself and be successful.
