Pittsburgh CLO delivers charming 'Peter Pan'

Pittsburgh Current: If they gave out prizes for the Wackiest Successful Broadway Musical, surely they’d just hand ’em all to Peter Pan and retire the award. Though I was dateless for Pittsburgh CLO’s production of this fantasy musical, I kept whispering to my imaginary seatmate: “Did that just happen?” “What the hell was that number about?” “On what planet does this make any sense?”

Having seen this show multiple times, including during this run, I would agree it is a strange show. The production, scenery, and effects are typically impressive; however, the storyline is a little questionable. It is a magical experience for kids, but anyone older might be confused or a little skeptical of the story. The CLO's production was unique for me, in the fact that I got to sit in on their tech for the show. At the CLO, they tech all in one day, this show being a little different with the performer flying. It was a unique experience to see the performers first reactions to being lifted off the ground, all the way through the different mechanisms and rigging used to fly the performers. Overall, Peter Pan is a great show, with an interesting story. And although some people are not too fond of it, it is a classical musical tale that children everywhere love.

I think its interesting how they took out one of the songs from the original musical for this production. I understand that some of the songs can be seen as racist but certain things are integral to the play. I also think that having Jenn Collela in the title role is interesting as she has been in Come From Away for the past few years where she played an adult. I can see how she is able to transform into the youthful boy for the part and how she would be very good at playing Peter. I wonder why they did such a limited run of the show as it would cost a lot of money to install the whole flying system and pay all the costs that come with that. I wish I could have gotten to see the show as I think that Jenn is a very good actress.
