Shax, The Hong Kong Theatre Group That Is Shaking Up Shakespeare

The Theatre Times: Rosalind Wong didn’t plan to win the Hecklers Award 2016 for Best Director – but she did, walking away with Hong Kong’s top theatre prize at the tender age of 27. Nor did she expect the Shakespeare theatre group she founded as a student to end up collaborating with the prestigious Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. But it will, as the brand-new concert and play Ode to Shakespeare premieres this month.

Shax is an extremely innovative concept, and a great example of how theatre continues to innovate, no matter the era. While rethinking Shakespeare isn't a new idea by any means, it takes a lot to be able to get it right, let alone good. Shax seems to have been able to do both, as is evident from its meteoric rise, an extremely impressive feat. Furthermore, the integration of Asian culture is something that isn't commonly done, and the merging of the two worlds is a new frontier, especially for works of Shakespeare. Moreover, this is something that could potentially lead to more and more Asian representation in Hollywood and Broadway, something that has only recently been on the rise. I hope this group is able to grow into a worldwide phenomenon and bring newly imagined Shakespeare to life.
