I fear we are stuck in the era of jukebox musicals, and I wonder if Broadway will ever have a period of only original works again or if we are stuck in a cycle of adaptations from one work to another. This feels like the hundredth adaptation from screen to stage or vice versa and though there are a select one or two that may be completely original is feels as though we can’t escape the capitalistic nature of “it worked over there, so it’s got to work over here, and we’ll make a huge profit from the cult.” I’ve never heard of the movie this is based on, but that’s hardly revolutionary as it was a coming of age movie in 1998. I looked up the soundtrack and by name alone, I’m not sure that I know any of the songs listed. Upon looking up almost half of the movie soundtrack, I can’t say that I knew any of the songs and I have this feeling that this will be a huge hit or miss musical and I’ll be happy to miss it.
