Back to the Future to close early; plans for tour scrapped

limelight-arts.com.au: Sydney’s season of Back to the Future: The Musical will now mark the end of the show’s Australian run, after producers abandoned plans for a national tour and confirmed the production will close at the Sydney Lyric Theatre on 25 January 2026.

I feel so so bad for the touring cast and crew of The Back to the Future Musical. it's heartbreaking to have to close a show on its own but for producers to change their mind at the last minute and decide to cut your national tour short while you're doing it is absolutely heartbreaking. I understand that theater is a tough gig and job security is never something you're necessarily intending, but when you book something like a Broadway national tour you do anticipate at least some kind of security for a few years. The show was super fun when I saw it in New York and London. The cast was excellent and there were a lot of fun gags with the set and costume that were very akin to some of the campiness of the original movie. I wish the best of success to all of those involved and hope that they find new and better opportunities outside of this production.

It is reallty sad to see such a fum and campy show lose popularity and get scrapped so quickly. It was so fun, from all the promotional material I'd seen! All of the costumes and set pieces were super sick, too. I also follow this guy on tiktok who was playing Marty McFly for a bit, and every show was so high-energy! It devastates me to see something that everyone is so excited about, and is dropping a lot of things in their life to tour with, just be cut like that. There's so many super cool shows out there, and I guess we just don't have time to do all of them. As a theater enjoyer as well as a theater maker, I feel for those who wanted to see and experience the show, as well as those in it. Hopefully, something greater is on the horizon for them!
