I think this is so great to read about because abuse, sexual coercion, and assault are unfortunately common realities in the workplace. I think we have seen some shifts in the right direction, especially with the rise of intimacy coordinators on bigger sets. I think this shift to also protecting people on smaller productions is really incredible. Although slightly unrelated, I think about how not only difficult but dangerous it can be for women especially in the workplace. The murder of Amber Czech has been on my mind a lot lately, she was killed by a coworker because he thought she gave him a “bad look” and it just has been reminding me about how important protecting people (both men and women) from harm and exploitation in the workplace is. I think there is still a long way to go in terms of the arts being less exploitative, especially for actors but any step towards the protection of workers is a good one.

I unfortunately have worked in plenty of spaces that have not felt safe or welcoming to me as a woman in this industry. To have a community such as Hollywood Commissions create an initiative as useful as “Respect on Set” shows me how far we have come thanks to movements like the #MeToo movement. People need more training on not just how to NOT harass someone but also what to do when someone tells them they have been harassed. Retaliation is a real thing as much as people try to say that it does not happen, it very much does, so to have an initiative work on eliminating it makes me hopeful. Unfortunately more people than one might think experience harassment based on their gender, sexuality, and/or race which is what makes this initiative incredibly helpful. To have an accessible helpline for those who are experiencing harassment but might not know what to do about it is very helpful and should be known about more.

I think it's great that we are finally doing something about this issue. It's great that there's finally One Singular place to access a lot of different resources when dealing with any sort of harassment. it's really interesting to me that Anita Hill, the person who accused Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment, is the person who is chairing this program. The numbers that drove this program to Creation are rather staggering, though. The idea that 95% of those surveyed both wanted these resources and didn't know where to look is definitely less than ideal. I think that part of this is because our industry is so driven by passion, that it's a lot easier to exploit than other Industries, partially because people care more about their jobs and positions, but also partially because I think the amount of power and control that leadership positions are afforded attract people with predatory intentions.
