Harlem’s Free Holiday Lights Parade Happens Tonight in NYC

www.timeout.com/newyork: Harlem is flipping the switch on the holiday season tonight and doing it with more flair than a midtown window display. At 6pm sharp, the 125th Street Business Improvement District (BID) will roll out New York City’s only parade of holiday lights, turning the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare into a mile-long glow show complete with music, giveaways and community performances.

I absolutely love neighborhood holiday light displays, and I think it’s a really fun and cool thing when a whole street or block or something coordinates to go all out with the Christmas lights and decorations and insanely giant themed displays. Growing up, the equivalent version of this parade in my neighborhood was “Christmas tree lane,” which was definitely not a full mile, but was a couple of blocks of houses that had all-out holiday light decoration, which was super cool. I have never heard of Harlem’s holiday lights parade before, but I think it is really cool that it has been going on for so many years, and I definitely hope that it continues to happen for many more years. I think it is really cool how each of these years has a specific theme, and I am curious about what previous themes have been. I am also curious about how the theme is chosen.

This is the first I have ever heard of this holiday light parade, but I could not be more glad that it exists. Light parades that are focused on bringing a community together is one of the best parts of the holiday season, and have the power to bring people of all walks of life together to share in a moment of awe and joy. On top of that the fact that this parade seems to be focused on charity and giving toys to those who may other wise not have any is truly heartwarming. Though it is truly a shame that these toy drives are even necessary regardless I am glad that there is a group of people who are able to come together with the soul purpose of bringing smiles to a whole community. It is also crazy that this tradition has been going on for 125 years. That is some incredible dedication, and commitment to being a part of Harlem's community in NYC, and I truly hope that it is a tradition that will stay around for as long as possible.
