I love Chicago, the musical! It is a classic musical that is one of the most iconic musicals. It makes me so happy to read that it has now it 29 years on Broadway! One of my favorite parts about this show is the dynamics of female sexuality and how these women use it to their advantage. One of the iconic songs from this show is “Razzel Dazzel,” and it could be said that this is the main storyline plot of the whole show; every single one of the characters in this show learn and explores what and how each person can manipulate the media, courtroom, and community into believing whatever story they are spinning. I also love how the story is told through the character breaking the 4th wall and narrating the story while also being inside the story. This gives us one narrative of the story and invites the audience into the story.

I have thoughts on Chicago on Broadway. I saw it on a whim on my first trip to New York City in middle school. I am extraordinarily glad it was not my first Broadway show. Do not get me wrong, I am obsessed with Chicago and everything Fosse; however, the energy in the theatre was so low. I think this has to do with the fact that the show has been running as long as it has. I know that the show tries to bring in new names as much as they can to bring a new energy to the show, however, I believe I saw it in a lull of casting. It was very apparent that the actors and musicians were simply going through the motions of the show. I think the fact that Fosse’s choreography is so nuanced, not flashy at all, and that the show is in a massive theatre does not help its case. I hope that other people have better experiences with it, as it is a classic show and clearly very successful.

I have never seen Chicago, however this definitely made me want to see it! I had no idea that this is the longest running production currently on Broadway! A 29 year run is really impressive, so they must be doing something right! The choreography and costumes in the video looked stunning! I have obviously heard the songs “Cell Block Tango” and “All That Jazz”, however I don't think that I have actually ever heard any of the other songs in the show. I do really enjoy the style of those songs though! I designed the lights for a few of my highschool’s dance concerts and one year they did both of those songs. It was really cool to see that crossover! I also never knew that Chicago won so many awards. I do have tickets for the tour coming to Pittsburgh, so I now am definitely looking forward to seeing that production!

While I’ve never watched this show, I’ve heard so many great things about it. With how long it’s been on Broadway, part of me feels like if you’re a theatre lover, it’s required to go see it. I will say though I have been hesitant to see it, the minimalistic look with the costumes all black is interesting to me and I’ve personally liked shows with detailed designs. Other than that the only thing I’m really familiar with the show is the iconic song “Cell Block Tango.” I’ve even seen someone’s own concept of the song’s lighting design on instagram. I will say I have always enjoyed older musicals, such as Bye Bye Birdie, or something that has that style, like The Great Gatsby. Something about the older time style music is just enjoyable and fun to watch or work with, so watching this show would definitely be something on my bucket list.

I LOVE Chicago the musical and it will forever remain one of my favorite musicals ever. I did Chicago my senior year of highschool and that production did not do it justice whatsoever and I want to see it done right and well so bad. A 29 year run for a single musical is insane work but also not surprising because of how popular this show has remained throughout the years. Cell Block Tango is one of my favorite songs from a musical ever. I love songs that are so explicitly about female rage and I love this song for that because it is an absolutely perfect example of female rage. Yes the show is about female murderers but also they are kind of valid for some of this stuff cause like to be so honest who wouldn’t want to kill someone for constantly popping gum. It’s annoying.
