Tour Backstage at the Old Vic - a new kind of back-of-house
Wallpaper*: Backstage at the Old Vic – the theatre's new building – may seem a relatively modest project on paper; a slim structure including space for some social and back-of-house spaces, around the back from the main, 1816-built theatre. By another metric, though, it is huge. 'It is the first addition to the Old Vic in some 200 years,' says Laura Stevenson, executive director of The Old Vic.

Theatres love a good restoration, especially one that is about 200 years old. The idea of having a space where the creative community can come and get a coffee, while perusing scripts or writing their next play, is really inspiring. It shows that the theatre is really centered on their community and how they want to go about changing. I think this idea has really stuck with me because I have never heard about a theatre doing this and offering social spaces that aren't reserved for the show in that space. The addition of the theatre spaces also shows that they are looking at how to reinvent the space as a whole. By installing upgraded dressing rooms and adding more accessibility throughout the space, it is a more focused innovation for the cast and crew. The idea of this building also being sustainable in its construction is great, and I personally think that theatres need to be thinking about more.
