A Complete Guide to the Plays of Samuel D. Hunter

www.broadwayworld.com: Samuel D. Hunter’s plays have quietly shaped contemporary American drama. Known for their compassionate look at working-class lives in his native Idaho, Hunter’s works explore faith, loneliness, community, and redemption with remarkable empathy. Hunter (finally) just made his Broadway debut in 2025 with Little Bear Ridge Road, now running at the Booth Theatre.

Samuel D. Hunter has a very specific voice that is easily seen in each of his works. I have been extremely fortunate in having theater companies that wanted to produce his works before things really started to heat up for him. The number of times one of his works was suggested was more than I’ve seen any other contemporary artist suggested, save Larissa Fasthorse for The Thanksgiving Play. I have had the privilege of being able to work on a production of Bright New Boise at Iowa Stage Theatre Company and to see the production here at Carnegie Mellon University. This is one of his better-known works and unfortunately is where I was introduced to his works. I wish that I could say I like his works, but unfortunately, they come off as mundane to me and almost on par with works that are required reading because someone said “this is revolutionary.” His works may be revolutionary to some because they aren’t used to seeing the everyday mundane lives of people that live in rural America, but as someone that came from there this is not a place I want to pay to be transported to as it really does feel like nothing happens.
