In Jesa, Jeena Yi Wrote the Asian American Family Drama She Always Wanted to Be In
Playbill: Who doesn’t love an American family drama? A family, sitting in their living room, fighting and rediscovering each other is the bread and butter of the American theatre. Actor Jeena Yi has long loved classics like Death of a Salesman and Long Day’s Journey Into Night, even as she knew she would never be cast in those plays.

I absolutely love the idea that Yi wrote a show that she has always wanted to see about Korean Americans. She is an example of if you have the will. Or what will be accomplished. Her schedule may be a little crazy, but it seems worth it for the outcome and product that she is giving to both of these shows. At this point in society, I feel like more culturally relevant shows should be produced. This meaning includes different cultural stories and ethnic experiences, as Yi has done. I remember that John Legazamio produced a show about a Latin family around November at the Public as well. I just think more shows like this need to be on, not only does it give a chance for people of that cultural background to see their similar stories or experiences on stage, but also to expose people to cultural diversity. I hope more people are like Yi in the way they need their stories to be heard so much that they write and produce their own show.
