A Harry Potter Light Show Will Take Over the L.A. Sky With 1,200 Drones

www.timeout.com/los-angeles: Los Angeles is about to get a little more magical. This June, the sky above Dodger Stadium will transform into a glowing wizarding world spectacle as 1,200 synchronized drones take flight for a one-night-only Harry Potter-themed show.

The introduction of drones allows designers to take outdoor lightshows to the next level. While drones often are treated as a point source of light I would argue that they can more truthfully be referred to as moving lights than the more traditional fixtures that we see. Drones by nature have 3 positional degrees of freedom while traditional stage lighting are constrained in position. Due to this limitation of traditional theatre lights lighting designers need to take great care what lights are positioned where to achieve their design contrary to other disciplines such as scenic design where the scenic designer can often leave the construction details to the scene shop. While for obvious reasons I don't believe that drones will take off in traditional theatre for a long time this is an interesting first step towards lighting design becoming further separated from the technical elements. While designers need to understand the limitations of the drones many of the finer details are not as necessary for the designer.
