Phish at the Sphere: Recapping a Spectacular First Weekend

I was intrigued by this article because I already have seen some discussion online about the lighting design for this Sphere concert, and more specifically about how a virtual rig was being used for certain songs. I don’t really know how I feel about that concept. Something about going to a live event where there *are* visuals resembling a traditional concert lighting rig, yet those visuals are actually just a rendering of a virtual rig, feels wrong to me. But at the same time, I feel like I personally am more drawn to that as the visuals for this kind of concert than abstract swirling colors stuff or just close-ups of the artists. It’s also an interesting question for if there is ever virtual reality that does become decently popular, if a similar system would be deployed for use in virtual concerts. In some ways one could compare this to other instances of new technology imitating older technologies for aesthetic purposes, like LEDs imitating incandescent light.
