The Unpredictable Issue Facing Universal After ‘Harry Potter’ Reboot

disneytips.com: Universal has spent years gradually expanding its Wizarding World. But with a full-scale Harry Potter reboot now in motion, questions are rising about whether those details can – or should – stay frozen in time.

I feel like this article is looking for a problem that doesn’t really exist. The premise that Universal must completely renovate its theme parks’ multi-million dollar areas to correlate with a television network’s reboot, is a misunderstanding of how theme parks operate. The movies exist for good, and the visual identity that Universal created, the design of Hogwarts, the costumes, and the music, now serve as the “real” design of this world for many fans.

For example, Disney does not recreate their classic attractions every single time a live-action remake comes out. The reason why an attraction like the Haunted Mansion is iconic, is because of its longevity and consistency, not because it attempts to follow whatever Disney does to recreate one of its films. Overcoming the obstacles of J.K. Rowling’s involvement with Harry Potter related subjects and/or any public sentiment being shown against Rowling creates way too many financial hurdles for Universal to consider rebranding their entire company in any fashion.

This is really interesting due to the fact the the new harry potter series has not even been released yet... I could see these as a future issue, but it should not be this pressing when people have not watched a season of the show. If they where to intergrate some of this reboot into the world I would think they would just do it small with merch first. I also don't think a change will be need because one the worlds are already bulit around the movies, and two because the storyline is the same except for more details. I also don't know how fans would react because there have been mixed feeling on the reboot. I don't think this is or needs to become a concern until after the 8 seasons have been produced and released for audiences to experience. I feel Universal is at a good spot, especially with Epic Universe becoming the newest attraction.

As someone who loved Harry Potter as a kid and who went to Universal to experience the “Wizarding World”, I think it is silly that we are having this conversation. Franchises as big as Harry Potter are going to have remakes, remakes that are fundamentally the same, but also have a new take on the content. I do not think that Universal needs to worry about the park not looking like the new content because the old content is still incredibly popular and honestly I could not care less about the “accuracy” of the park. That may be because while, as I said before, I loved the Harry Potter series as a kid, I have very different opinions about it now because of J.K. Rowling. The Harry Potter series was about not fitting in, but finally finding a place where you belong. However J.K. Rowling has ruined that with her opinions on the LGBTQIA+ community and her racism.
