Does Olivia Dean's "I've Seen It" copy Bill Withers' "Just The Two Of Us?"
Boing Boing: British singer Olivia Dean's song I've Seen It lifts a section of melody from 1981 Bill Withers hit Just The Two Of Us, according to a lawsuit [PDF] filed in California. The songs "share musical features … so striking" that it cannot be a coincidence, claim lawyers for Mattie Music Group, which manages Withers' catalog.

I find these copyright battles between artists are a bit excessive. I understand that an artist’s work exists as their work and property, and should absolutely be protected, but in circumstances where the imitation of another song is not blatantly obvious, these battles often end up nowhere and fail to come to a substantial conclusion. Music is everywhere; I often find myself humming melodies that I can’t recall where I heard them. When an artist is crafting a song, I can only imagine how many notes and scales and melodies are in their mind, so if they subconsciously included a section that another artist used in their piece, I don’t see a large issue with that. If that artist makes a habit out of it, I get it, but life is also full of coincidences. I just hope that Olivia Dean is still able to profit off of her work, as it is a lovely song with many uniquely creative aspects.
