An open letter to 2026 Philly Fringe artists
Broad Street Review: I see you sweating. I see you performing without AC in our muggy September. I see you doing the work to set up and clean up (including water, paint, salt, powder, and clay) and turn the space around since there are three more shows in there tonight.

I enjoyed reading this open letter to Philadelphia Fringe artists. As a Philly native, I found it an inspiring reminder of the determination and grit Philadelphians possess, especially those in the theater and live performance. Philadelphia’s Fringe scene is profoundly unique and vast—it's one of my favorite times of the year to witness new, invigorating work, site-specific productions, and sometimes just a funny, scrappy show. I think the open letter is important for acknowledging the unpaid (or very small paid) work these artists accomplish and the strange, challenging conditions in which they work. This acknowledgment is critical. In addition to this specific context, I think it is also important to highlight the author/organization writing this. Broad Street Review is Philadelphia’s premier arts critic. They give insightful reviews of a wide variety of productions in the area. I know that I and other artists are deeply appreciative of how they have contributed to making theater accessible through a variety of ways and, importantly, keep the Broad Street Review free with no paywall.
