The Dismantling of Teatro de Contêiner

HowlRound Theatre Commons: In the middle of a brisk mid-August evening in 2025 in São Paulo, I meet a friend near Praça Roosevelt. He’s a theatre producer from Rio de Janeiro in town for work. We are supposed to get drinks, catch up. Instead, he whisks me away with him to the neighborhood of Luz at the site of Teatro de Contêiner, where we join a crowd of hundreds protesting against the theatre’s eviction from the space.
