The Most Sustainable Gym Floor Is the One You Don’t Replace

Buildings: When organizations begin to evaluate the sustainability of their athletic facilities, conversations tend to center around the materials, emissions, and green building certifications. While those factors matter, they only tell part of the story. One of the largest, and most overlooked, contributors to a facility's sustainability is replacing a gym floor before it has reached its intended service life.

I really enjoyed reading this article. It makes a lot of sense that nothing is more sustainable than just not having to buy anything. The logic used in this article to prevent that concept reminds me a lot of the general discourse between real versus vegan leather. While vegan leather might prevent having to use parts of an animal, using the far more durable real leather and taking care of it kind of ends up being more sustainable, since it lasts a lot longer and prevents the need to manufacture new plastic-based vegan leather. It definitely makes sense that preventative maintenance is the best way to keep a floor’s lifespan going, and I am sure that countless gym floors end up being replaced way too early because some places decided to be cheap when it comes to cleaning products. 30-45 years is a pretty long time, and especially since small repairs can be done in spots, encouraging people to maintain their existing floors to keep them sustainable makes a lot of sense.
