A Scottish "Midsummer!" Homecoming

College of Fine Arts: This summer, students, faculty and alumni from the School of Drama made a theatrical pilgrimage to Andrew Carnegie’s homeland of Scotland, where they performed a radically reimagined adaptation of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

When the Center for New Work first introduced me, I didn't really understand the scale of how large their production of Midsummer! would end up being. There were so many drama students involved, whether they were acting in it, designing, managing it, or doing research for the show; there were so many lovely people involved with this process. The opportunity to travel to Edinburgh, Scotland, and not only explore the city but perform there every day and see a handful of shows every day sounds like a wonderful and educational summer to have. After seeing the huge success and turnout of this year's Fringe Festival, I'm so interested in applying and participating in the next show that the Center for New Work puts on. I cannot believe that this is the first time I am hearing about the Fringe Festival, as it is the 79th season of this festival happening.

As someone involved with the Center for New Work’s Midsummer! I can say it was a lovely experience. I am so happy that I got to work with such talented other students and go experience the fringe. The actors clearly had so much fun on stage and got to experience what it is like to be on a show with a much longer run than they are used to. It was also really fun to be able to work so closely with the other techies. I feel like at CMU (and elsewhere), the technical director does not work as close every day of the run with the other techies as I got to while in Scotland. I got to watch how Julie, Bri, and Rachel had to set up every day and lend a hand where I could. After watching other shows at the fringe, I realized how lucky we were to have so much money in our budget so we could explore more concepts.
