Studio Teachers’ Union to Merge With IATSE Property Crafts Local
www.hollywoodreporter.com: The studio teachers‘ union Local 884 is set to combine with the property craftsperson union Local 44 following a member vote approving the consolidation. Eighty-five percent of participating members of Local 884 voted “yes” on the merger earlier this month, while 90 percent of Local 44 voted to support the combination a few weeks before, according to sources.

I think this is great news for the Studio Teachers! This article dives into how this small union struggled in the past due to its size and lack of a permanent headquarters for its operations, so the idea of merging with another union has been thrown around for the past few years. Studio teachers are a vital part of the entertainment industry, especially in Hollywood with California’s very strict codes regarding schooling for child actors on set. Even if this group is losing the luxury of having their own union, they will now have more resources to voice their concerns and more efficiently operate, such as having a physical headquarter to operate in. The Local 44 union is also very welcoming to this new addition to their ranks, and they have already ensured that there is representation from this group in its main board. Personally, I don’t see any negative to this arrangement!
