Best Utility Knife 2026: 9 Models Tested, 1 Clear Winner
Pro Tool Reviews: As I write, I’m sitting here with a pile of 9 utility knives on my desk from 8 brands, including Milwaukee, DeWalt, OLFA, Stanley, and others. They have different sizes, shapes, blade types, blade change mechanisms, and more. But which one is the best?

Ok so I am not very familiar with utility knives and all the situations needed for them, which is why I thought it would be fun to react to this article. Some of the criteria for the rating surprised me because I did not know those were functions of the utility knives. This was really helpful because I didn’t realize there were different types of blades and even different ways of removing/replacing them in the knife. I think after reading all the reviews I would end up picking the DeWalt. It is retractable and I recognise the name. It is also a bit bigger which is something I prefer when it goes to box cutters and utility knives.
I also thought it was kind of silly at the end of the article how the website plugged themselves and gave a whole spiel of why their reviews are the best.
Utility knives, in my experience, go by many different names. One shop I worked in called then boxcutters, another mat knives, and another OLFA knives. Embarrassingly, it wasn’t until I read this article that I realized OLFA knives are, in fact, a brand of utility knife. All this to say, I have never put much thought into utility knives, which was why I clicked on the article. It was then interesting to read how the knives talked about were scored based on categories like: ergonomics, cutting performance, edge retention, ease of retraction/extension, blade lock security, and ease of blade change. These are all things I had kind of unknowingly been looking for. Though I can't say off the top of my head I have a preference, I do remember in each shop I remember having clear preferences in which utility knife I would grab. Never the silver retractable ones, as i didnt like how they felt in my hand, and unless I was carving foam I didn't want the sliding plastic ones either. However, it was interesting seeing it all laid out in categories and reading about how differently each one performed in these different categories.
