I think SSL’s new Music Mixing Certification is a great idea because it gives aspiring audio professionals a more structured way to develop their skills, which is extremely important in a profession such as this one. I like that the program focuses on more than just learning software, as it covers important concepts such as critical listening, sound balance, effects, dynamics, and professional mixing. These skills are useful because, from my experience, creating a good mix requires both technical knowledge and creative decisions. I also think earning a recognized certification could help students demonstrate their knowledge when pursuing opportunities in the audio industry, as when I earned an AutoCAD certification in high school, my work became more desirable to employers. However, I don’t think a certificate alone can replace hands-on experience or a strong portfolio. Overall, I think this certification could be a valuable starting point for people interested in music production, but only if they combine the training with experience.
