'They Were Freaking Out': Why MN United FC's Game Day Production Crew Went on Strike

Racket: The labor movement is always looking for digestible examples to demonstrate the apparent spite with which the ruling class views workers. Ultra-rich Minnesota United FC owner Bill McGuire, who once led Minnetonka-based insurance giant UnitedHealthcare, gifted striking in-house production workers at Allianz Field field a doozy.

There has been a lot of news about unions striking over the past couple of months, both within the entertainment industry and elsewhere. There was also a lot of news around IATSE pink contract workers potentially striking about a month ago. That being said, I am surprised that I had not heard anything about this particular strike until today, although my guess is that is because it is a fairly small crew who is striking.
Another thinking that I am noting is that while we normally just think of IATSE in regards to our industry, it also covers Film, Broadcast, and Trade Show workers. I think it is interesting to me how related these fields are, and how they are represented by the same union.
I also think that union strikes are a lot more interesting for the IATSE disciplines. In other disciplines, it can often be fairly easy to hire scabs, but in production fields, the operators have so much expertise and knowledge of their systems that they cannot easily be replaced. This means that when they strike the show cannot go on and there are bigger consequences for the company.
