New mid-scale theatre for Sydney to open late 2024

limelightmagazine.com.au: Foundation Theatres, the owner and operator of the Capitol Theatre and Sydney Lyric Theatre, has announced plans to modify the existing under-utilised rear stage of the Sydney Lyric to create a new mid-scale performance space for up to 630 patrons.

This article gave me a lot of encouragement that Sydney is so interested in opening new theaters at a time when there are a lot of questions about theater’s place in society as we come out of the Pandemic. Too many of the stories I hear are about theaters closing or struggling, and it is encouraging to hear a more positive tale.
I also find the idea of combining multiple theaters into a single performing arts center very interesting. On one hand, this can be very beneficial because facilities like lobbies, bathrooms, dressing rooms, and loading docks can be shared by multiple productions, but on the other hand, the production management for this venue will become significantly more difficult. Rather than having full reign of the building, each group needs to coordinate with each other to ensure that they do not need to use the same resources at the same time and that they are not making noise in other theaters during performances in one theater.
