Benjamin Moore Selects Space-Inspired Shade as Its 2024 Color of the Year
Builder Magazine: Announced at Blue Origin's orbital launch site in Cape Canaveral, Florida, Benjamin Moore has named Blue Nova as its Color of the Year for 2024. The intriguing blend of blue and violet was inspired by the brilliance of a new star formed in space.

I recall several weeks ago another article on the blog discussing the “Color of the Year” a couple of different paint companies had realized, and I was slightly fascinated by that and also thought it was a little odd. My feelings have not changed. It’s interesting how Benjamin Moore is preparing to release a trends palette for 2024, a year that has not happened yet. I still theorize that I bet it’s all just a way to sell paint colors that aren’t having great sales. That being said, while I had previously not been a big fan of a lot of the previous colors of the year for 2024 that I’ve seen, I do actually really like this shade of blue. It’s a really lovely balance of a fun powdery blue, without being too overpowering in my opinion, since it’s pretty muted. I really love how it looks with the rusty-colored, burnt-orange furniture accents in the example image. This is a color of the year I can get behind.
I’m interested in the effect of naming a color “color of the year.” Does that mean it’s the most popular? Or that it will be used more within home designs or furniture produced in collaboration with Benjamin Moore? Are they hoping that as it is the ‘color of the year’ that will make it sell more? Or is simply having the event of naming a ‘color of the year’ good publicity for the company, and a way to keep eyes on Benjamin Moore and remind them to shop there. This is an article all about their paint color, so if that was the intention it must at least be working a little. I think Blue Nova 825 is quite a pretty color. I don’t know if I’d automatically use it in a home, however I might, as it is a nice neutral in the way that it has a depth of color and is interesting to add to a room, but doesn’t shine so brightly your eyes are hurting - appropriate for a living space. Colors for homes are so different from simply loving a color - they’re much more difficult to pick to accommodate the space and to make for a good living environment. My family had a neighbor who painted their home a bright blue - like a dark blue you’d see in a sour candy. On paper, I can see how that might be a nice color, however on their house, and against their brick it was quite too bright, and noticeably the neighbors with this home repainted only a few weeks later with a more neutral color. It makes you think though, it must take practice to pick the ‘perfect’ color to live with - and that idea also may seep into set design, when thinking about designing an imaginary home to make it look reasonable for someone to live in.
I'm not going to lie I don't love the color of the year. The Blue Nova 825 is a bit dull and unexciting to me. Color is so expressive and I think it is really cool how people interpret color and how it can completely create a mood. Colors have connotations, I receive this color in a depressing sense. However, I think the fact that it is space-inspired makes a lot of sense for 2024. Our world is being put in perspective. How big the galaxy is, how small and sometimes unimportant Earth is. Also, with new discoveries, in now times it is important to look to other outside forces for peace. To me, it is relieving to hear that there is still so much out there outside of our planet. Last year, I took an astrophysics and astronomy class, I still remember how awesome it was to be enlightened about space and time. So although the color is not for me, I can respect what it stands for.
