US Senate Bill Would Prohibit AI from Stealing Likeness, Work of Artists

www.thewrap.com: The U.S. Senate is working on a bill to prevent the use of artificial intelligence to steal appearances or voices of singers, actors and other artists for profit. The bill, announced by four senators Thursday, coined as No Fakes (Nurture Originals, Foster Art and Keep Entertainment Safe Act), is supported by Hollywood creatives who have expressed concerns that their likenesses can be stolen by AI.

I feel like this is such an interesting and important issue to discuss. It is so new and I wonder what other bills will have to continue to be passed due to AI. It makes perfect sense as to why the U.S. Setae is working on a bill to prevent people from using AI to steal the appearances and/or voices of performers. Permission should obviously be required to this. This bill clearly follows the same structure and ideas of other bills that relate to copyrighting in the industry. I’m glad that this is being worked on and that it is something that is supported by both political parties. It’s also interesting that the bill includes free speech protection. I feel like I would not have originally thought of that, but it is definitely important to include. Overall, it is imperative to make sure actors’ and performers’ rights are protected and that their hard work is not taken away from them without giving them credit. I hope that both this issue and the other issues that are involved in their strike can be resolved as soon as possible, so that the industry can continue working as it once was.

There is a new bill in the senate that would prevent the use of AI from stealing the work of artists for use in its training data. After reading the article, I believe that this one is way too vague in its meaning. What sort of new copyright protection would work created by AI have? What about artists whose public domain work has been used to train AI? How would this affect the artists legitimately using AI to help them create art? What even counts as AI? Technically photo editing tools use a form of intelligence to autocorrect color in images, would this be disallowed under the rules? These are just a few of the questions this bill is trying to address, but ultimately falls short of giving specific protections for each of these things, and if it does manage to grant protection, it’s overly broad and could be detrimental to the free knowledge economy. I also think that this bill being passed into law would help the actor’s strike, as a major part of their strike is increased protections against the use to fake digital replicas of performers.

As new machine learning and artificial intelligence software are rising and upcoming and improving rapidly, it is important for bills and laws to be set out and taken action pretty fast. AI art is something that has been going around on social media and has already taken so many jobs. When I saw this article, it made me feel a bit relieved that there is action being taken by our senators on this matter. I feel like with everything going on in the world right now, it is easy to overlook something like this or not consider it as important, but with just this bill so many artists' jobs are being saved. Getting this bill passed on Hollywood initiatives is so important. Hollywood has an incredible amount of money yet they always strive to cut their artists short. Over worked under paid is always the motto, so that is why unions are so important too. Making sure these job security and artist's originality is being saved and protected is a great move for industry workers.
