‘Suffs’ is coming to Broadway with Hillary Clinton and Malala Yousafzai as producers

www.timeout.com: Chronicling the years that preceded the passage of the 19th Amendment, when American women ostensibly achieved the right to vote, the musical from Shaina Taub puts a spotlight on feminism with a “catchy mix of jazz, Tin Pan Alley and pop earworms,” Time Out reviewer Raven Snook wrote last year.

I feel like more and more information and shows about the suffragette movement are getting created and I like the concept of supporting women’s rights and publicizing it. What I think is so special about this show, and the backbone of this article, is that the people making this show possible are not your typical theatrical producers. This production is going out of their way to make sure that they are supported and protecting the people that the show is about. With having two big named producers who are influential to the society where the show is taking place, it is also not a bad move on the marketing department. There will be increased visuals of the show with the expansion of producers who are able to draw in a wider range of theatre goes to your typical producer by casting a wider net. Women’s right to vote is also something that, I am sure, both women are extremely passionate about so it can be a different way for them to have their voices heard.

The idea of this musical is very exciting to me, I haven’t heard of or seen too many musicals that sound like this. The thing that looks very promising and exciting is the production team, you have a lot of heavy hitters on the production side and I will probably see this show as much for the story as I will the leads. I am really looking forward to seeing a show talking about feminism because I think that feminism in the last couple of years has gotten a lot more complicated. Feminism isn’t just for the benefit of women but actually all genders and I hope a show so devoted to talking about and dealing with feminism in 2023 talks about this in a way where audiences will be willing to sit and think about said message and ideas. Overall I am really excited to see a musical about the suffragette movement because it not only is an important story to tell but I believe it will pack a potent punch and I hope it will resonate with audiences enough so that its historical and sociological importance sinks in.

I have been following this show since the beginning. One because I follow Jenn Colella and she was involved and two because it is a show that I really think I would love. I am someone who doesn't love big flashy shows or simple plots. I like shows like these that dig deep into our world to tell important stories. I think it is really interesting to have people like Hillary clinton jump on board to produce the show. I remember when I read that I had to read it again because it caught me off guard but I am hoping that will be incredibly positive. I have already seen a lot of hype around this show that is only continuing to grow so I have a feeling moving to Broadway will be successful. I am excited to see the full cast announced and hope to see some of the same casting from the Public Theatre run but either way I am going to make an effort to get to New York to see this.
