The White Lotus Season 3 Got a $4.4 Million Rebate from Thailand
IndieWire: Even guests at The White Lotus are cost-conscious these days.
When “The White Lotus” Season 3 chose Thailand over Japan, it received millions of dollars in filming incentives, Japanese producer Georgina Pope said at the Tokyo Film Festival.

I am a fan of The White Lotus. I enjoyed watching all three seasons. I feel like it was really well done. I had no idea that the last season was filmed in Thailand. I would have never guessed that. It is really interesting to learn about how the final location was decided and how that process works. I guess it makes sense that it relies a lot on the money involved and what kind of deals they can make. But, I am surprised that Japan does not have a film incentive system set in place. I thought that there have been several films made in Japan, at least more than Thailand. However, after reading this, I am learning that Thailand probably has had more films filmed there than in Japan. I’m assuming that this switch was not that big of a deal for the White Lotus team since Thailand is still an East Asian country, like Japan. However, it does suck that they had to ignore the beautiful locations they saw in Japan and had to transition to Thailand for filming.
My mom had introduced me to The White Lotus when it first came out, and we watched it together. While it took me a little while to fully immerse myself into the show, by the end I absolutely loved it. That was only added to the fact that many of the actors that are main characters in the season are ones I will watch virtually any project they are in, such as Aubrey Plaza in season two. I didn’t really process the fact that countries would have financial incentives for projects to film there, but it makes sense. Not only would it be funneling a lot of money into the country when it comes to cost to film there, but also could attract tourists to the destination through being fans of the show. While it is a little sad to hear that there was a location in Japan that seemed perfect for the show but was ultimately turned down for the money, I understand why. Also, I feel as though the show wouldn’t pick a place that didn’t work for the content that they were making, regardless of the money, so I am sure Thailand will be just fine. I am excited to hear more about the upcoming season and view it once it is released.
