Brie Larson's Lessons in Chemistry Look: Lab Coats But Make It Fashion
variety.com: Apple TV+’s “Lessons in Chemistry” follows Elizabeth, who dreams of being a chemist, but the world has other plans. Rather than listen to any of her ideas, the men at the Hastings Research Institute where she works believe she needs to smile more.

I have seen this book everywhere, and I had no idea it was being made into a TV show! Based on the cover of the book, I also had no idea it was set in the 50s. The cover gave very much the vibe of present-day college students. I love 50s fashion, so this was such a pleasant surprise. I am obsessed with the little couture lab coat look. I think it's so fun to think of new ways to make a lab coat still look like a lab coat but also deconstructed in a way where it looks new and fresh every time it's worn. I also really liked the detail of the green in every costume. I find it so cute when people have signature colors that they love so much that they find a way to wear them in every outfit. This show looks like it’s a blast to work on.
I hadn’t heard of this show, or the book, or anything about it, but it sounds like a fun book/TV show. I love the fun 1950s vibes being shown in all of the costumes, and I do love the color green, so I am always a fan of green being used as the iconic color in the costumes for this show. It also has nothing to do with the costumes, costume design of this show, or lab coats, but I love the super 50s kitchen set for what I assume is the cooking show set in the show. Absolutely iconic fun pastel pink everything with the retro appliances. I love it. I wish I could cook in it. And of course, it looks great with the fun lab coats that the main character is wearing. I am left curious about the plot of the show though, as I wonder how the concept of the lab tech who really wants to be a chemist became the host of a cooking show.
I found this article super interesting to read. I am a huge fan of the book Lessons in Chemistry and begged my boss at the children’s bookstore I worked at to carry it even though it was an “adult title” because of how great it is. I wasn’t originally planning on watching the television series as my love for the book runs so deep, however, this article has convinced me other wise. I really appreciated how nuanced the approach the costuming is and how Gordon-Crozier considered what the independent woman was. I found this nuanced approach to really exist in the description of the slightly different lab coats and how the extravagance of the coats match Elizabeth’s growing confidence. It feels very in line with Elizabeth’s character in the book. This article led me to question how much I pay attention to costuming in TV and film? It is far from my wheelhouse, however, now that I recognize the intricacies that exist behind it, I hope to observe these details more!
