Inspo from the Festival Season’s Experiential Builds
Exhibit Design: As trade show properties make moves to prioritize community and connection and create more opportunities for exhibitors—Outdoor Retailer’s acquisition of an adventure lifestyle festival as one example—consumer-style experiential is infusing booths with new energy. Here, we round up experiential strategies from the festival season to help inspire your exhibit design themes, builds and tactics to better engage trend-forward business audiences.

These look wicked cool. I understand that some people may believe that to work on a project like this would be selling out, using your artistic talents to boost up corporations and work as an arm of their marketing department. I understand this take from a idealistic stand point. But unfortunately for us, we do not live in an idealistic world. I think it is an easy position to have when you are not living paycheck to paycheck. Not that I think these artists are, merely stating that sometimes we do not have a choice in what we create, and even if we hate the project, we must try our best to make sure that we can support ourselves and those we care about. I think that these projects are absolutely stunning and show just how incredible these artists truly are, especially if they are given an actual realistic budget.
This article is a good example of how the techniques that we use in theater to design and build experiences have other applications such as in the convention market. I have also been interested that the trade show market falls under IATSE just like film, theater, and TV. Out of this collection of booths, the Reddit booth interested me the most. Reddit is something that is normally experienced on a website and in a 2D form, but this exhibit required putting those motifs and graphics into the form of a 3-dimensional booth. It must have been difficult to reconcile these two different design visions.
The other thing to balance in booths like this is how much to rely on modern technology and displays, and how much to reinforce that this is a physical place. In the modern day, it is easy to just go to a company's website or have a Zoom meeting with a salesperson, but I think that a booth has a unique ability to connect with clients in a way that a website cannot.
