REX reveals Brown University's new adaptable Performing Arts Center

www.archpaper.com: REX has released renderings of Brown University’s new Performing Arts Center (PAC), a 94,500-square-foot boxy building designed with a “radical vision” for the school that features a transformative interior production space. The massive institutional project, located in Providence, Rhode Island, is slated to open in spring of 2022.

The concept of this is very cool. It makes art adaptive to different venues and even might challenge people to try performance in a different configuration which can push the bounds of both what a performance can be and how it “needs” to be done. I would be interested to see how a space can perfectly make all five configurations work seamlessly. Different configurations may require different technical elements. I would especially be interested in seeing the stock of how this space works and the tracking they are implementing to keep everything organized. The manager inside of me would also be interesting to see what a year into this spacing being open would mean for organizational changes and for how they structure their season to work for the space. I also am curious what this means in terms of a booth for stage management and where in the space that is located and if it changes based on the seating configuration and style

I believe I read this article a year ago when I was looking into what schools I was going to apply to. Brown is an incredible school, although somewhat lacking in the arts. This new performing arts center is a huge step forward in funding the arts in Ivy League schools and one of the major reasons I applied to Brown. This space is like a production jungle gym in my brain. I think it would be fun not only to design in this space, but work in it in general. The ability to truly mold the space for whatever you see fit is such a cool gift to artists. This space reminds me of the new performance space in Lower Manhattan, which is also adaptable. I believe they were designed by the same company. In addition to all the insides I do enjoy the outside look of the building, however it does significantly stand out compared to the rest of the buildings on campus. I can see that as a good or a bad thing.
