To speak candidly, I found this article a bit confusing to read at first due to the different names used for Hollywood Legion Theatre, Post 43, and IATSE 33. However, after doing some additional reading on the parties involved, I now fully understand it. I view IATSE’s possible picketing over a single non-union projectionist being hired to possibly be a warning about conditions at the Hollywood Legion Theatre as a whole. As stated in the article, “Recently touted as the hottest red carpet in L.A., the Hollywood Legion Theater has been beset by a litany of problems including sexual harassment claims and labor strife.” I doubt this conflict of the projectionist exists independently. This article made me think about the relationship between unions. Typically, unions are seen working collaboratively against “the boss”, but in this scenario “the boss” (A24) and the union (IATSE) are collaborating against another union. I also believe this interesting relationship is telling of Post 43s current condition. I hope the worker conditions at the Hollywood Legion Theatre improve and that IATSE and Post 43 can go back to working together!
