'Cinderella' with a Clever Twist Presented by Resonance Works

onstagepittsburgh.com: It’s hard to imagine a more delightful birthday celebration than Resonance Works‘ three-act operetta, Viardot’s Cinderella. Based on that well-known fairy tale about the put-upon young lady and her glass slipper, Friday night’s adaptation had Cinderella (Cendrillon, from the French) reading from a book and musing, “This sounds so familiar but it’s rather … Grimm.”

I think that art that resonates with the community is sweet. This show brought in Pittsburgh elements to a classic story to relate to the audience which I really appreciate. The references to things like Giant Eagle and Pittsburgh Salad make the concept of live theatre less intimidating to new theatre goers. This show also had a Carnegie grad student in it. Virginia Tipps was the stage manager. I also love that Resonance Works has become a staple in town for arts in Pittsburgh with so many people work and growing their artistry there. What this show did that was unique, other than make Pittsburgh references, is that they made the show more immersive with things like appetizers and, for the children, a crafts table for their matinee show on Sunday. This also reaches out to the community and make people feel more comfortable and welcomed at a theatre they are new to.

I went to this show! I worked with Resonance Works last May when they did VERDI’S MACBETH. This company has always done art for the people of Pittsburgh. They focus on the performance rather than the magnitude of the show. They will perform in and make any space work. I believe that this was their season opener this year and it was super cute. It really was fun. I thought that some of the show was forced but it was a campy opera and that’s okay. Sunday in particular was geared more toward children anyway so maybe that played into the overall silliness of the performance. The kids there (and the adults) had a blast. There were cupcakes and punch and photos and even a wand making station which was super cute. I did in fact make a wand. Theatre that connects the community together like this is unique and I hope that more people will consider doing it. Perhaps the success that Resonance Works found with it will influence other companies to follow their lead. I for one wouldn’t mind eating more cupcakes before shows.
