The Top 20 Most-Produced Playwrights of the 2023-24 Season

AMERICAN THEATRE: Lynn Nottage returns to the top of this list, which she dominated last year as well, after popping on and off the list since 2016. She earns the top spot on the strength not only of Clyde’s, but a rich catalogue of popular works, including Sweat and Intimate Apparel.

Lynn Nottage was the most produced playwright of this year, and has popped on and off the list since 2016. I’ve never actually read or seen any of her works, and truth be told, have barely heard of her, or only heard of her in passing. Her work seems to primarily focus on the struggles of working class black americans, and telling their stories and experiences. One name I was excited to see on this list was Larissa FastHorse, whose show For The People is at Minneapolis’s Guthrie Theater, a venue I know quite well. The big shift in writing seems to be many more literary adapters and book writers for musicals, which may be because we as a culture are trying to honor the books of our past. This article introduced me to a lot of new shows, and I’d really like to go see Intimate Apparel, written by Lynn Nottage. I’m excited by where theater is headed in the future.
