Q&A With Willie Williams, U2 Visual Guru

Live Design Online: Starting back in 1982, and including such mega tours as Zoo TV in 1992-93, PopMart in 1997-98, Elevation in 2001, and U2 360° in 2009, Willie Williams—and his Treatment Studio—has been the designer and creative spirit behind the look for U2, collaborating with the band as their visual territory continued to expand. Now, 40 years later, their new show, U2:UV Achtung Baby Live has taken Vegas and the world by storm, opening the massive performance venue at Sphere, and creating a media storm in the process.

This was a really fascinating article. The Las Vegas sphere is such an odd but cool contraption, and since it’s such a cool and new, almost futuristic piece of technology, by extension, creating a show that uses the sphere also has to be basically a futuristic show. It’s really interesting to read about the design process for a show in a space that nobody has ever used before, and the logistical and technological challenges that come along with doing so. I don’t really know anything about how the concept for a major concert becomes a reality, so it was cool to learn the basics about the design process for doing so, and how this show different from a more traditional concert. I had no idea so many people were involved in just creating the idea for what the “story” is and putting together a cohesive concept before specific details are even figured out. I also thought that using VR to visualize the design was a really cool way to problem-solve the struggles of designing for a space like the sphere.
