Best U.S. Halloween Attractions: Haunted Ships, Corn Mazes, Hospitals, and More

Thrillist: Ghosts have no geographical limits. They can inhabit decrepit, Victorian mansions, yes, but they can also find their way into zoos, ships, hotels, steam engines, forts, and even shopping malls. Spine-tingling attractions come in all forms across the country—and in many cases, the jump scares take place in historic spaces (allegedly) filled with real ghosts for an added layer of terror. So this Halloween, think outside the stuffy basement and seek your paranormal pleasure elsewhere. Ready to face your fears? These are the best and most nightmare-inducing haunted haunted house alternatives in America.

YES YES YES!!! I know I have expressed this opinion already, but god I love halloween. Haunted houses are one of the peak forms of entertainment and I love them so much. Seeing these different forms of haunted attractions really intrigued me. There is a youtube channel called Watcher that explores “haunted” spaces with different gear meant to detect the paranormal and I really love watching their videos. They have been to many different locations, like boats and prisons and hotels, and that is what this article reminded me of. Also I love that they included the Stanley Hotel! As a coloradan it is a very cool place to have available. Since Estes is very far away from where I live, I have not visited but would love to stay in the hotel one day. Like many of the articles I have written on, I would love to work on a haunted attraction one day, and all of the ones mentioned in this article sound like a blast!

I am such a scaredy cat when it comes to halloween things and haunted houses and don't have that much enjoyment from getting scared in general. This article was still super fun to read though, and many things did still peak my interest. I was never big on halloween but in college, I have met people who are super into it. The Millers Thrillers Haunted Woods stood out to me the most. It is a spooky haunted forest, and what scares me the most is that it is outside. I don't know if the openness will make me feel more safe or more afraid, as I feel like the claustrophobicness you get from haunted houses adds to the effect. I think that it being outside adds to the effect and makes it feel more real. I was also surprised to see many boat-related tours. the Bloody Mary is actually pretty close to my hometown, and I have been on it since I was little. That one isn't too scary (I think....) and feels a lot more tour-y. I think any boat though is scary just cuz I personally would be afraid that it would start moving. Lastly, the zoo one scares me a bit. I hope no zoo animals are being treated kindly because even darkness or loud noises can really stress animals out.

So much artistic work is found during this time of the year. I appreciate the influx of work for the industry. It is such an interesting outlet and a time of year that is loved by so many people. I have so many friends that love the time around Halloween and get to fully express themselves more openly during the season where sometimes during other times of the year they feel like they can’t. I also love that people use the time to decorate the exteriors of their houses and with an influx of decorations where people can buy all different types of decorations for their homes. Of course, this type of decoration extends through the holiday season. I think this all just brightens the landscape of the communities which we live in. Anything to spruce up something that we see every day to bring us new appreciation for it is something that I can get behind.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE halloween! Though I am not the type of person to dress up and go out, I am much more of a person who would rather stay in and watch scary movies with my friends and have a low-key night. Though I love horror movies, the one thing I can’t do is a haunted house. I’ve been on haunted corn mazes, the fright fest at six flags, which to be honest, is not that scary at all. Obviously, the scare actors do a great job in bringing the characters they play to life. When I was a junior in high school, I knew this one girl who worked at Six Flags as a scare actor and she even said that there was a specific way to where the actors are placed, so the scares end up being very predictable. The article talked about a haunted attraction at the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philly which is something that I might be interested in doing! I live only an hour from the attraction so it is definitely something that I would love to visit (with my friends of course).
