www.dezeen.com: New York architecture studio REX has completed the "most automated" performance building in the world at Brown University's campus in Providence, Rhode Island.
Called The Lindemann Performing Arts Center (The Lindemann) the 101,000 square-foot (9,383-square-metre) structure consists of a shoebox theatre with a long bridge-like walkway.

I think that this building is a cool engineering marvel, but I had a lot of problems with this article and the design of this theater. First I think that it is very difficult to call any theater a “Holy Grail.” So many different types of shows and audiences benefit from different venues, and a single performance space cannot do all of these roles. It is also not the most technically advanced theater. I am thinking about the new theater in downtown Manhattan that has entire walls that move, not just some truss pods and seats. Third, I think that this theater does a great disservice to the students at Brown University. They will get very good at working in this particular theater with all of its quirks and LED rig of Series 3 source 4s, but that is not going to prepare them well to work in most of the entertainment industry. This theater does not appear to have any form of counterweight system, which while not strictly necessary, is an important piece of equipment for students to learn to use. Overall, while this theater shows off how much money Brown has, it does not seem to me to be the “Holy Grail” of theater design.
This was a cool article to read. I do not know if I was totally able to grasp the concept and envision what it was talking about but it does sound really cool. I am someone who gets stressed out when it says it has a lot of automation just because automation scares me but I think with the right training it would be awesome to work with. I do wonder if this is the best learning environment as there is nothing else like this out there at the moment. It could be a really productive environment because it provides more opportunity for learning but that was just something I thought about. One thing I really like about the design of this building is that they made an effort to display the art inside the building on the outside. Sometimes I wish we could put our hard work that we do in purnell on full display for the rest of campus to see. I think it would be a really effective tool to draw people in because it makes them curious.
