I had no idea that this was even a thing. This is such an exciting idea. I personally love flea markets! This is now on my bucket list of things to go to. I love the fact that Broadway is used as a way to raise money for a meaningful cause. It is so important to continue to fight AIDS. It’s incredible that they have been able to raise over $17.5 million. I wonder if the items that get auctioned off are actual items from Broadway shows. It seems like they sell all the leftover merchandise flea-market-style. I also wonder if that merchandise is sold at a discounted amount. It would be interesting to see this in person and learn actually how many people come to this event. It seems like it would be a field day for Broadway fans. I’m surprised I have not heard about this before. I wonder if it is being advertised well-enough. Do enough people know about this? Could it be possible to spread this event to more people and raise more money? I also wonder how this event started and what inspired them to raise money in this way. It would be interesting to learn about that story.
I think this is such a fun little industry thing that just makes people happy. It is the community coming together and for such a great cause. The fact that this tradition has gone back thirty-six years is also so wonderful. It is such an ordeal to have a show not run for a period to people could get together and for such a significant part of Manhattan to not have traffic running through it. For something to become a staple of the industry takes such commitment, especially from so many people. Also, seventeen and a half million dollars raised over the last thirty-six years is an incredible amount of money that has the ability to impact so many people (and their families) lives. I also think it is fun for fans to be able to get stuff from their favorite shows. I also saw that there was some merchandise that was specific to tours or limited show runs that were not typically available in New York.
I absolutely positively love what Broadway Cares does! I love their Broadway Backwards performance every year. They’re always so clever. It’s so awesome to see amazing talents coming together and just having good old fashioned fun. And for a good cause too! At some point I would love to go. However for now watching it online will have to suffice. I have wanted to go to the Broadway flea market/ grand auction for a while but it always happens when I’m in school. I got to live vicariously through the photos on the website. I didn’t realize just how big the flea market was until I saw the photo. It is crazy that they have been able to raise so much money. $17.5 million dollars is a crazy amount! I wish the article talked more about what items were sold and such. I would love to see what they are auctioning this year.
The Broadway flea market sounds like a really cool place. I think it is very admirable that it is donating to an important cause like AIDS as well. The idea of selling previously owned goods is very natural to me, it seems like the way things should be. That's why I enjoy thrifting and markets like this. I also think it is a great place where people can share common interests and indulge in some theater merch and swag. The entertainment industry is all about enjoyment and passion, lighting up someone's mind with creativity or making people hear and see a message. A thing like this reflects what Broadway stands for, it is for people who appreciate the art of theater. I would go to this market, I don't think I would go to the auction, because I am not a huge Broadway fan, but spaces like this always provoke thoughts and ideas in me.
